I'm also planning on changing Star's hair color with each storyline, probably eventually rotating back to the red I introduced her with once I run out of colors.

My money is on there actually being a lot of medical professionals who dye their hair. Such as male doctors and nurses how are starting to go grey, female doctors and nurses who don't believe that their natural hair color is 'beautiful' enough (whatever the hell that's supposed to mean), and a mixed bag of younger ones who do so out of a sense of 'individuality' or such (and now that I think about it I might've met one of them at my local hospital even).
I do have a hunch though that a lot of punk wannabe women would actually feel more comfortable at a clinic where one of the doctors obviously dyes her hair than at a different one.

yeah... i'm getting at the notion of uniforms that limit hair dye to "natural" colors or no "visible" piercings. at least the piercing thing isn't in effect for the girl at the reception desk of the abortion clinic in juno

Ear piercings for females have been considered acceptable so long as the earings worn are 'tasteful' (the tasteful isn't always well defined). It's the other piercings, or males with piercings (never mind the fact that around 300 years ago there wasn't any gender discrimination regarding ear piercings, and I'm not really sure what started it), that are considered unacceptable.

I have a nurse friend with naturally carroty red hair who dyes a streak of it several colors ranging from lemon yellow to black.
Especially as medical staff gets younger, I'd actually expect to see a lot more of that, depending on individual professional appearance standards.
